Nudity needs to become the new normal

case for clothes free to improve women image and self image OpEd: Nudity needs to become the new normal But by more nudity, I don’t just mean more perfection, more sanitization, more photoshopped, starving, plastic models. The sight of a breast should neither offend us nor rile us up into a sexualized frenzy. Enjoy them privately with your consensual sexual partner if you’d like, but there is really no reason why a glance at a breast outside of that situation should reduce women to little more than a sexual commodity, to be judged and dehumanized. Nor should we assume that men are incapable of seeing women beyond that scope. read more

Nature was naked, and I was also

Nature was naked, and I was also. It was too lazy, soothing, and joyous-equable to speculate about. Yet I might have thought somehow in this vein: Perhaps the inner never lost rapport we hold with earth, light, air, trees, &c., is not to be realized through eyes and mind only, but through the whole corporeal body, which I will not have blinded or bandaged any more than the eyes. Sweet, sane, still Nakedness in Nature!—ah if poor, sick, prurient humanity in cities might really know you once more! Is not nakedness then indecent? No, not inherently. It is your thought, your sophistication, your fear, your respectability, that is indecent. There come moods when these clothes of ours are not only too irksome to wear, but are themselves indecent. Perhaps indeed he or she to whom the free exhilarating extasy of nakedness in Nature has never been eligible (and how many thousands there are!) has not really known what purity is—nor what faith or art or health really is. (Probably the…

Practicing Ahimsa and Aparigraha with Nude Yoga

As a yoga instructor, studying the philosophies of yoga is essential.  The philosophy of yoga as described in the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali is the ancient moral systems (written around 200 A. D) that we as yoga instructors and practitioners of yoga are to practice.  As mentioned in this website, http://www.expressionsofspirit.com/Yoga%20Philosophy.htm: “The first two limbs of the philosophical yogic tree that Patanjali describes are the fundamental ethical precepts called the yamas, and the niyamas. These can also be looked at as guidelines of universal morality and personal observances.  The Yamas and niyamas are suggestions of how we should deal with people around us and how we can optimally shape our attitude and behavior. The attitude we have toward people and things outside ourselves are the yamas, how we relate to ourselves inwardly are the niyamas (pronounced nee yamas).  Both are mostly concerned with how we use our energy in relationship to others and to ourselves.” YAMAS: Ahimsa: (non-violence) compassion for all things. Satya: (sincerity), truth seeking. Asteya: (non-stealing), Don’t take advantage of others. Brahmacharya: (Moderation and self-control with sex), not necessarily celibacy…

Naked yoga — Does it have any real health benefits?

clothes free yoga fad or healthy? Naked yoga — Does it have any real health benefits? ‘It frees you from negative feelings about your body and allows to be more accepting and deeper connected with yourself and the world around you,’ Joschi Schwarz, who owns the studio with partner Monika Werner, was quoted as saying. According to their website, ‘While many equate being naked with sex, this could not be further from the truth in a naked yoga class.’ ‘It’s about knowing, accepting and loving yourself at your core. Part of yoga is to honour and connect with your body,’ it added. ‘When you have more confidence in a naked body, you have more confidence in your clothed body,’ added Werner. read more

Our homes – our rules

The previous post here (How do women really feel about nudity?) has attracted many readers, but has generated surprisingly little discussion. Curiously, one point that has been raised was somewhat tangential to the main topic. I cited an article by Kate Messinger. A reader questioned my take on how the boyfriend Kate was living with was careful to let her know that he had returned home with some friends – in such a way as to suggest she might want to take action in case she happened to be naked, as in fact she was. It wasn’t clear from Kate’s article what motivated this precautionary measure: We have to wonder why Kate’s boyfriend couldn’t simply have informed his friends that his girlfriend liked to be naked and asked whether this would be a problem for them. We can only speculate. Would doing that have embarrassed him? Was he afraid Kate would be embarrassed? Would his friends have been upset about Kate’s nudity? Was her boyfriend unwilling to allow her to…
